Victoria is a great cycling capital, with plenty of routes criss-crossing the city and beyond. Contact Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition for route maps and information. Bike rentals are available from a number of outlets in town.
Victoria Harbour Ferry provides scheduled services to the Inner Harbour, Songhees Park, Reeson's Landing and other stops along the Gorge Waterway with its colorful armada of bath-sized boats. Fares vary with the distance traveled.
Victoria Regional Transit buses, including some double-deckers, cover a wide area in and around the city. All routes require a one- or two-zone ticket, valid for up to 60min of transfer travel. You must have the exact fare to purchase a ticket on the bus. Day passes are available from convenience and grocery stores. Taxis are widely available in Victoria, and major car-rental companies have offices at the airport and in the downtown area.
Aboriginal families, known as the Songhees, the Saanich and the Sooke First Nations, originally inhabited Southern Vancouver Island. Victoria still retains deep ties to these First Nations communities. The city’s motto is Semper Liber (Always Free).
On July 21, 1871, British Columbia became Canada’s sixth province and lovely Victoria was the region’s new capital.
